Carol Allen, known to students as the Undergraduate Secretary, began her first day of work for the NC State Department of Computer Science on September 5, 1978. Carol remembers her amazement when she first saw the "hussle and bussle" that takes place on campus, an activity that hasn't changed significantly over the past 24 years. She also recalls making daily trips from Daniels Hall to Cox Hall to use the copy machine shared by the entire college of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (PAMS).

Carol earned her Associates Degree at Wake Technical Community College in Secretarial Science and NC State was eager to hire her before graduation. After a variety of interviews within different departments on campus, Carol finally selected Computer Science. At the time, Dr. Donald Martin was the department head.

Carol said, "It's interesting to see the many changes in technology since I started working for NC State. I've gone from key punch cards to online databases. It's difficult to even imagine how we used to operate." Carol also comments on the growth the department has experienced since it was founded in 1969.

When Carol first began, she provided her services as a typist and was in charge of a managing a small computer science library in Daniels Hall, which is no longer in existence. During her first six years in the department, few faculty used personal computers to generate correspondence or to draft tests. Carol was responsible for using her typewriter to transcribe and interpret their handwritten notes and exams. With time, she came to recognize each professor's handwriting.

Now, as a Student Services Assistant, Carol is responsible for interacting with undergraduate students and managing student records. Specifically, she is in charge administering teaching evaluations, assisting faculty with revising and updating course information, changing grades, and ordering and organizing the diplomas for each student.

Carol lives in Garner with Mike, her husband of 23 years, and her two boys, 17-year old Michael and 9-year old Philip
