Dr. Sarah Heckman is the first Teaching Assistant Professor with the Department of Computer Science. She is also a three time graduate of the department, and received her Ph.D. in August of 2009. She has taught Intro to Programming in Java. Dr. Heckman is the Managing Editor of the OpenSeminar in Software Engineering and the OpenSeminar in Empirical Software Engineering. She was the creator and first general chair of the 2008 Symposium for Graduate Research in Computer Science held at NCSU and led the first Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Training workshop. Dr. Heckman was president of the Women in Computer Science student organization, an officer-at-large in the Computer Science Graduate Student Association, and the graduate student representative on the Computer Steering Committee. She served on the organizing committee for the NCSU Geek-a-Thon in 2007 and won the 2008 Joyce Hatch Service Award. She is a three-time recipient of the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship.
